A Top 50 Bestseller in three categories, THE WILD ROSES is the sweeping tale of three women who find themselves caught up in a swashbuckling adventure of high action, comedy and romance to save the king and country. Within months of each other, King Louis XIII, Cardinal Richelieu, and the powerful Queen Mother Marie de Medici all died, leaving France of 1648 in the hands of a Child King. The result is a power vacuum, from which aristocrats hope to plunge the nation into civil war, which could determine the balance of power in Europe forever. A plot by the leader of the aristocrats has been set in motion, kidnapping the young king, to force the royal family to abdicate. Near-helpless, the Queen Regent and her Chief Minister Cardinal Jules Mazarin try to stave off the threat, but with little success. And so, as the life of France begins to break down, lawlessness in the streets breaks out. In the midst of this turmoil, three young women – unaware of one another – have each suddenly been forced from home to face their own steep hurdles alone that have changed their lives. And though they don’t know it, those separate lives will soon entwine with one another, and the destiny of France.

One thing that's a drag about our short-hand culture these days is how an original idea is often reduced to some simple, pithy, easy to digest descriptor. What winds up happening is, everything is given equal weight - there's nothing that really separates the great idea from the merely ordinary one when you reduce it to ten words or less."Die Hard on a boat," for example, might sound a fun premise for a movie. (I can assure you it was anything but.) Conversely, "Three musketeers but with women" is so much more than that simple descriptor. It gets your attention, sure - it raises your eyebrow but in the end, it doesn't begin to hint at the real treat that lies in store.
I had certain expectations going in when I cracked this book open - I envisioned a fun adventure, a romp through history, and plenty of humor along the way. Don't get me wrong, all those things and more are within these pages. What I didn't expect was to be moved as much as I was by the three heroines at the heart of the story and their relationship with one another. The other thing I didn't expect was to read a 350+ page book as quickly as I did. But I got caught up very quickly and after that it was off to the races with this thoroughly entertaining read. It just sparkles - and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

The Wild Roses Robert J Elisberg 9780615841199 Books Reviews
Fine for light, quick read.
Decent character development, somewhat predictable, but still fun imagery and nice for a train ride or Sunday afternoon in the park.
I could not find a good reason to engage in this story. The characters were lacking in depth and development.
The Wild Roses is action-packed - a real page turner! At times, I felt like I was watching an adventure flick filled with intrigue. Come to think of it, this book would make a wonderful movie! And how fun to have female swashbucklers as the central characters.
This book is fun to read, but a bit too fanciful to be thought of as historical. Nevertheless, as I said, it is fun.
With wonderful characters and thrilling adventures, this book will keep your attention and get your heart beating rapidly. Though a few typos and formatting problems exist, this historical fiction is a wonderful, wild ride.
--and my swashes are buckled!
"Wild Roses" reminds me of my favorite historical fiction-- C.S. Forester, Rafael Sabatini, and even George MacDonald Fraser, he of sainted memory.
Maybe Elisberg is the guy to pick up the Flashman mantle?
A ripping good tale and historical adventure in the vein of "The 3 Musketeers" or "The Count of Monte Crisco." No damesels in distress these. A classic swashbuckling story not bogged down in arcane language.
