Not all fairy tales are friendly.

Rowena thinks the Grimm’s infamous podcasts are simply another teen fad until she finds herself trapped in a land of nightmarish storybook characters. She tries desperately to flee Mezzanine and return home, but Dresdem, Mezzanine’s wicked monarch, plans to use Rowena’s access to her world to bring dark magic and absolute rule into Georgia and beyond.

But when Rowena’s dear friend Madeline falls into Dresdem’s grasp, her battle with him becomes war, and all hopes of home are temporarily thwarted. With the help of an invisible hero, a beast, and an owl, she sets out to free Madeline from a deadening sleep. But Rowena must become her own hero when she finds herself bound by the kingdom’s darkest family. She must make the ultimate choice—align herself with her enemies or live on the run forever.

FABLED is a unique spin on the Grimm’s fairy tales, but instead of being a traditional retelling of a specific piece of folklore or mythology, it’s an original fairy tale with familiar themes and tones but with an authentic new main character. This young adult fantasy combines magic, action and adventure, and paranormal with a dash of romance and betrayal.

Being kidnapped, enslaved, and forced into making the biggest decision of her life doesn’t sound like much of a fairy tale to Rowena. She only thought she wanted an epic life. Be careful what you wish for.

Rowena loves her calm uneventful life, loving her boyfriend, Dashielle, and wondering what her goals will be since her graduation. But things are about to change in a most unexpected way. It all starts with an invite to a very unusual costume party. After chasing after her obnoxious sister, she lands up in the land of Mezzanine with no way back. What is she to do in a strange place with no one to help her and no way of reaching her beloved home and family?

This is just the start of a journey that will be intriguing and inspiring. I read this so fast and now have to wait for the next book in the series, I hope!

Fabled eBook Vanessa K Eccles Reviews

My daughter loved the book.
4.5 Stars! Eccles has woven together a magically Grimm fable. I'm already begging for the next installment. With history, legend, and a a villainous ruler...what could possibly go right-er wrong?
I enjoy the “modern girl dropped into a fantasy reality” premise, so I stuck with this book through some long frustrations. As a heroine Rowena is pretty passive. In her real life she is in her senior year in high school, and has no aspirations other than being Dashielle’s girlfriend. Once she gets dropped in Mezzanine most of the forward motion of the story happens because someone kidnaps her.

There are clever story elements The Grimm brothers doing podcasts from Mezzanine onto “Terra” radio; Mr. Carol being a slightly pervy Royal in love with a 14 year-old girl … there are multiple characters who are inspired by characters from Grimm fairytales and Alice in Wonderland. A lot of the plot elements, and backstory were very clever — that’s what was able to sustain me, I was curious about the story even if I didn’t feel connected to any of the characters.

For someone who defines herself by her relationship with Dashielle, Rowena is sure able to fall in love with Chester easily, but I was never impressed with *why* they were drawn to each other. He leaves her often, and has stated that his only other relationship was because he was lonely. They don’t really talk that much to each other. I don’t see what qualities she has that would be all that enchanting, and what he offers her other than being nice. There is a lot of stress put on the fact that no one in Mezzanine should be trusted, so I’m left wondering what he expects from her. She spent more time building a relationship with Cade, and he was someone she could rely on, but apparently he’s been bewitched/in love with someone he hasn’t seen in hundreds of years, so he’s taken.

There is also some bizarre grammar. Using “I’s” instead of “my” or “mine” was the most jarring.

Story ends well for book 2 to be better. There is hope that Roe will grow as a character & be more active in the decision making process going forward. Now that she can make choices, my expectation is that the first book is just a whole bunch of set up for the 2nd book to have people doing things and not just have stuff happening to them. Even though it was a bit hard to get through, I am curious to see what happens next.
I really enjoyed reading about Rowena and her non-stop adventures in Mezzanine. I only wish the book would have continued on so I could know who/where she chooses in the end.
I had a hard keeping up with the different storylines. Totally not what I expected, then when I got into it the ending just did not make any sense.
Confusing read. Hated the ending. Skipped pages at a time. I finished it as i thought I might know what would happen. (which might have redeemed the book somewhat) I was wrong on every count, and ended up wasting my time. The end made it even worse than I thought. The cover is beautiful.
I love fairy tale retellings and such, so this one was near the top of my TBR list. Although it wasn't exactly what I expected, I did read this in one sitting and ended up staying up to the wee hours of the morning to get the that last page.

The main character of this, Rowena, is a modern day girl. An introvert but she's got that handled and has a wonderful, long-term boyfriend too. Although she might come across as timid at times, she has a strong personality and solid sense of what is good and right. We get a nice feel for her and her boyfriend before she dives into the other world, which was perfect for the contrast later on.

The descriptions in this book are well done. I had no trouble embracing both worlds and could easily dive into the fairy tale realm. There are a lot of different personalities among the characters, and it isn't easy to decipher who's friend and who's foe. There's drips and dabs from the traditional fairy tales, but they are folded into the dark world so well that they take on a life and twist of their own--for the most part.

There's a lot going on, and Rowena jumps from one situation into the next. Or at least, it feels that way. The story slips over weeks and months with only a few words, letting the book stretch over a longer period of time. But from what we see, Rowena doesn't have much time to breathe and it kept me glued to the pages, wondering what would happen next.

There's a romance, a sweet one, but I'll admit that it didn't really pull me in and felt a little shallow. But then, several of the relationships seemed a bit superficial and others were a bit blurry as to what was going on. There are several characters which are easy to sympathize with (and I loved to get to know), but others never left the page.

There are lots of twists and turns, and all sorts of unexpected circumstances, which bring the story to life. The intrigue and power struggles go deep, and there are many hidden agendas. All of this is neatly folded together, making it a fun and seamless read. The ending rushes in with a few surprises (some I'm not sure what I think of), but considering this ends as a complete cliff-hanger, I'm betting that will all be taken care of in book two.

Summed up, Fabled offers an intriguing, fairy tale world where things aren't what the seem and power is key. It's easy to get lost in the plot and Rowena's adventures, and although some little things didn't grip me completely, I did get caught up in the pages and am curious what the outcome will be.
